A four-foot female blue shark, part of a species known for their prevalence and migratory habits, was found washed up on a beach in Seaside, Oregon, as reported by the Seaside Aquarium. According to the KOIN, the aquarium received a report on Tuesday about the beached shark located by Avenue U and was able to recover the animal "in great condition," despite the circumstances of its demise.
Blue sharks, characterized by their distinct coloration and torpedo-like shape, often traverse oceans, some tagging experiments revealing journeys from Southern California to the Oregon coast. As noted by OregonLive, these creatures are capable of growing up to 13 feet in length and hunt using the natural phenomena of electromagnetic pulses. Known to be a relatively harmless species to humans, the blue shark is sometimes inadvertently caught in gillnet fisheries targeting swordfish off Oregon's waters.
In an unusual twist, the Seaside Aquarium has opted out of a necropsy for the shark. Explaining their decision, a social media post highlighted the challenges in pinpointing the cause of death in marine specimens. Instead, they're taking an educational approach. "We were able to recover it," the Seaside Aquarium stated, intending to dissect the shark with a group of students, as fundamental questions about life and death hover over its corporeal remains, as per KOIN.
