The Milwaukee County Zoo is mourning the loss of its 55-year-old river hippopotamus, Patti, who was reportedly the oldest hippo in U.S. zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Patti was humanely euthanized last Sunday after showing signs of severe distress and declining health, including lethargy and a loss of appetite, according to FOX 6.
Patti, born at the Dallas Zoo, made Milwaukee her home in 1972. Weighing 3,000 pounds, she was considered a petite member of her species. In her later years, Patti received regular supplements and arthritis medication. While the typical life expectancy of a hippo in captivity is 36.7 years, as reported by WISN.
"Patti died surrounded by her animal care team, including the zookeepers who best knew and loved her." The Milwaukee Zoo announced her passing after a period of illness, with early reports suggesting she had been suffering from severe gastroenteritis. While Hippo Haven is currently closed, the zoo plans to reopen it in the spring and is also preparing a new habitat for hippos and rhinos, set to open in fall 2025, as stated by WISN.
