On two select days geared towards the festive frenzy of holiday shopping, Montgomery County is rolling out a gift of its own to shoppers: free parking. The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) has announced an initiative to suspend parking fees in their garages and lots on Saturday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 21. However, it should be noted that this benevolent gesture does not extend to on-street meters, which will still be enforcing fees on these dates.
Designed to coincide with the bustling retail activity on Small Business Saturday and the pre-Christmas shopping spurt known as Super Saturday, the initiative is aimed at encouraging locals to patronize businesses in the area. "I am pleased that the County will offer free parking on Small Business Saturday and Super Saturday, which we know are some of the busiest times for holiday shopping," County Executive Marc Elrich expressed in a statement obtained by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), as per a press release on the county's official website. His sentiments echoed the county's support for brick-and-mortar establishments that dot the local landscape, contributing to Montgomery's distinct community fabric.
To complement the parking perks, MCDOT is promoting the use of public transit with a gentle reminder that the Ride On bus service is an economical alternative at just $1, seamlessly connecting shoppers to major destinations within the county. As residents and visitors map out their retail routes, the Ride On Trip Planner app is a recommended tool to optimize travel times with real-time bus arrival updates.
A nod to small businesses and the distinct flair they bring, this local policy maneuver is structured to galvanize foot traffic and show solidarity with the merchants that bind the county's economic and social threads. "We hope by offering free parking, residents and visitors will take the time to shop in person at some of our local businesses," noted MCDOT Director Chris Conklin, in what serves as an explicit invitation to consumers to embark on a more personal shopping journey amid the ease of e-commerce.
