A tragic incident occurred on Kapiolani Boulevard near Ala Moana, resulting in the death of a moped rider Wednesday evening. According to Hawaii News Now, the man, believed to be in his 30s, was broadsided by a vehicle around 6 p.m. while the driver was making a turn onto Mahukona Street from Kapiolani Boulevard.
The rider, who wasn't wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, was ejected onto the roadway, sustaining critical injuries. Subsequently taken to a local hospital, he was pronounced dead while under medical care. The woman, aged 31, involved in the accident was unharmed and cooperated with authorities at the scene, KTVI reports.
As the investigation continues, Honolulu Police Department have preliminarily ruled out speed, drugs, and alcohol as contributing factors to the crash. The identity of the moped rider has not yet been released pending family notification. This event marks the 43rd traffic fatality on Oahu this year, showing a decrease from the 51 fatalities reported at the same time last year, as reported by Hawaii News Now.
