The Vatican has officially announced the succession of the Most Reverend Jeffrey S. Grob as the 12th Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. At 63, Grob is set to take up the mantle from Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki following his retirement notice upon reaching 75 years of age. Grob, who was ordained bishop in 2020 and has been serving as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago, anticipates a January 14 installment for his new role, administered by Papal Nuncio to the United States, Cardinal Christophe Pierre, as relayed TMJ4.
In a nod to his roots, the Archbishop-Designate expressed, "While still recovering from the surprise of the Holy Father’s appointment, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to take up this new role in my home state," TMJ4 reported. Grob's Wisconsin background stands prominent, having grown up on a dairy farm outside Madison, creating a narrative arc that seems full circle to return him to his home state in a position of prominent spiritual leadership.
In a display of eagerness to seamlessly integrate into his forthcoming responsibilities, Grob has voiced a commitment to engage with the local community in a devout and down-to-earth manner, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel elucidated. With the looming challenges of dwindling parish numbers, infrastructural excesses, and the need for increased clergy, Grob's grassroots approach might just provide the necessary salve to soothe the archdiocese's current adversities.
The new Archbishop's vision includes initiatives to infuse the church with youth vigor and vibrancy, as he understands the profound importance of engaging and inspiring the younger generation within the spiritual sphere. His views on parish consolidation reflect a careful, case-by-case approach, appreciating the delicate balance churches hold in their communities, as detailed by WPR.
Grob's appointment follows the larger church movement of introspection and dialogue, coming on the heels of the Vatican’s Synod on Synodality. This aligns with his goal to echo Pope Francis' aspirations for a church that's more participatory, and more attuned to its mission of reaching out and drawing in all people with the light of Christ. The acknowledgment of the school's importance, and the need to assist Milwaukee's less fortunate, weigh heavily as part of Grob's incoming agenda.
