
A serious collision involving a white 2024 Chevrolet Suburban and an orange 2017 KTM motorcycle left the motorcyclist critically injured on Honoapiilani Highway, as reported by KITV yesterday. The accident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. last Friday, less than half a mile south of Kekaa Drive in Kaanapali. A preliminary investigation revealed that the Chevrolet was executing an illegal left turn onto the highway when it was struck by the motorcycle.
The motorcyclist, a 35-year-old man from Lahaina, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room. "The man, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision," according to a statement obtained by KITV. Both occupants of the Chevrolet were uninjured, the 37-year-old female driver, and her 41-year-old male passenger, visiting from Washington State, were restrained by seatbelts at the moment of the crash.
Subsequently, the driver of the Suburban was arrested for Negligent Injury in the First Degree and released pending further investigation. KHON2 confirmed that as of the initial report, it was not clear if speed, drugs, or alcohol were contributing factors in the incident.
As of now, the ongoing investigation looks to uncover more information regarding the circumstances that led to the severe injuries of the motorcyclist, "Officials said the Chevrolet made an illegal left turn out of a parking lot onto Honoapiilani Highway," according to KHON2. Local authorities have not yet released any updates following the incident on the condition of the motorcyclist, or any potential changes in the status of the driver's arrest.
