The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced a significant five-month pause of the A train service stretching to the Far Rockaways in Queens, as reported by PIX11. Starting January 17, 2025, and slated to last through May, the shutdown will affect not only the A train's Howard Beach–JFK Airport to Far Rockaway–Mott Avenue and Rockaway Park–Beach 116th Street routes but also the Rockaway Park Shuttle service to and from Broad Channel. This step is in response to necessary structural reinforcements of the viaducts and bridges, notably damaged by Superstorm Sandy, and to bolster the system against potential future calamities.
Commuters who rely on the Rockaway Line, including more than 9,000 daily riders, will bear the brunt of these disruptions. FOX 5 New York shared details on the temporary service changes, which during the initial weekend of the repairs, from January 17-20, 2025, will see A trains not running between Howard Beach-JFK Airport and Far Rockaway-Mott Avenue, with the Rockaway Park Shuttle also being unavailable. The MTA plans to offer free shuttle bus service, with nonstop connections between key stations and others making all local stops, to mitigate the inconvenience for affected travelers.
As January 20, 2025, draws near, travelers should prepare for the longer-term adjustments. A trains will no longer connect Howard Beach-JFK Airport with Far Rockaway-Mott Avenue or Rockaway Park–Beach 116 Street, and the Rockaway Park Shuttle will cease to operate to and from Broad Channel. Commuters can instead rely on a pair of shuttle bus options: the Q97 nonstop route and the Q109, which will serve as replacements with stops at Broad Channel and Beach 90 St. Service will continue as usual between Inwood-207 St and Ozone Park-Lefferts Blvd or Howard Beach-JFK Airport, ensuring some level of continuity for riders.
This extensive project underscores a sustained effort to rebuild and enhance the subway system's resilience against future storms, tracing back to the lingering aftermath of Superstorm Sandy's wrath. While the upgrades promise a sturdier infrastructure, the MTA has arranged for free substitute bus services, inclusive of two specific routes to cover the breadth of the interrupted service patterns. They are providing the Q97, which will run nonstop between Howard Beach-JFK Airport and Far Rockaway-Mott Avenue, and the Q109 route, rolling out between Howard Beach-JFK Airport and Beach 67 St, with stops at Broad Channel and Beach 90 St; all in a bid to maintain a semblance of normalcy for the thousands whose daily journeys this suspension will upend.
