In a recent operation by the New Bedford Police Department, a 14-year-old boy was apprehended with a loaded handgun. According to a social media post by the department, detectives located and arrested the juvenile this past Tuesday, who was wanted for his involvement in an earlier shooting incident.
The circumstances leading to the arrest involve a shooting that occurred in an apartment on Studley Street in early September; a single shot was discharged into the floor, thankfully not resulting in injuries but raising serious concerns about youth violence and firearm possession. During the arrest, law enforcement officials found the teen in possession of a Glock 17, loaded with thirteen rounds and equipped with an extended magazine capable of holding up to thirty-four rounds. "It's unsettling that such a dangerous weapon was found in the hands of such a young offender," said Chief Paul Oliveira, as reported by the New Bedford Police Department.
The arrest and subsequent firearm seizure were the result of collective efforts by the Major Crimes Division detectives and state troopers from the VFAS unit, a team focused on tracking individuals prone to violent acts. The New Bedford Police Chief expressed hope that this arrest might represent a pivotal change in trajectory for the youthful suspect, acknowledging the need for intervention beyond the law enforcement sphere. The department is encouraging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward anonymously via the police tip line or through their website.
