As travelers embark on their holiday journeys this Thanksgiving season, it's important to be aware of new guidelines now in effect to safeguard their trips, particularly those recently implemented by the Biden administration. According to KHOU, since October 28, airlines have been required to automatically offer cash refunds for cancellations or significant delays—defined as delays of three hours or more for domestic flights and six hours or more for international flights. Additionally, carriers must refund baggage fees if luggage is not delivered within 12 hours domestically or 15 to 30 hours internationally, as well as fees for services like selected seating or internet that were not provided.

Following the Thanksgiving travel period, more than 550 flight delays and cancellations have impacted many travelers' plans, with over 70 disruptions reported at major airports in Texas alone. The Midwest is experiencing wintry weather, while the East Coast is dealing with rain, both of which may lead to further travel disruptions nationwide. Airlines are advising passengers to monitor their flight statuses, and no waivers for weather-related changes have been issued. The Transportation Security Administration is also preparing for increased passenger volume, recommending that travelers arrive early and pack efficiently, according to revelations by Statesman.

With the Department of Transportation's newly launched dashboard, travelers now have access to information regarding airline services related to cancellations or delays, helping them manage disruptions more effectively. According to USA TODAY, December 1 is expected to be the busiest travel day following Thanksgiving, compared to the relatively quieter Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, and the following Tuesday. Major travel hubs such as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, and Denver International Airport are anticipating heavy traffic, particularly during the morning hours, as per Statesman.
