Motorists in New Orleans are hitting a roadblock on the 700 block of South Broad Street, effective immediately. The Department of Public Works reported that Hard Rock Construction, LLC, a contracting firm, is executing utility work as part of the Iberville, Tulane-Gravier, LGD, CBD Group A project. This work is what has necessitated the lane closure, which will last until November 29, as announced by the City of New Orleans.
The closure means changes for drivers: Traffic that is typically enroute lake bound will be diverted to South Galvez Street. Public safety concerns have prompted the deployment of safety measures, including signage and traffic barriers, such as barrels and fencing, to guide vehicles and pedestrians away from the construction site. For those navigating the area, caution is advised due to detours and road closures, which are currently in place. Additionally, local residents and businesses were informed of these disruptions through a neighborhood canvass effort.
The City of New Orleans focus on improving infrastructure is embodied in the $21.8 million Iberville, Tulane-Gravier, LGD, CBD Group A project. The project was planned by GreenPoint Engineering and is being carried out by Hard Rock Construction, LLC. Those interested in understanding the full scope of the project—or viewing the community meeting presentation and map—can find details on the City of New Orleans website. The scope of work, varies by block but includes major overhauls like sewage, water, and drainage line repairs; full street rebuilds; and refurbishments to sidewalks and curbs.
Work on the project takes place from 7 a.m. until sunset, Monday through Friday. According to the schedule, this substantial overhaul is set to be finished by fall of 2025, providing the weather does not introduce delays. As the City of New Orleans looks to its future, the fusion of necessity and progress continues, to shape its streets in ways both visible and beneath the surface.
