With the end of daylight saving time, the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) is reminding residents to "Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery." The department encourages residents to adjust their clocks tomorrow, November 3, and replace smoke alarm batteries, according to a recent press release.
The NOFD advises residents with hard-wired smoke alarms to replace their 9-volt backup batteries and recommends testing long-life, sealed lithium battery smoke alarms, which are becoming standard. In addition to battery replacement, residents should check the expiration dates on the back of smoke alarms, as these devices have a limited lifespan.
For those with outdated 9-volt smoke alarms, the NOFD offers a free exchange for new 10-year lithium battery smoke alarms. Residents with 10-year models should also check expiration dates as part of monthly fire safety checks. This service is designed to ensure all households have access to reliable smoke alarms.
The NOFD has also partnered with the New Orleans Health Department to provide and install Combination Carbon Monoxide/Smoke Alarms (Combo-Alarms) free of charge. These devices detect both smoke and carbon monoxide. Residents can request these alarms by calling 504-658-4714 or through the City’s website.
