Beginning next week, the streets of New Orleans will see increased school zone safety measures. As stated in a recent announcement by the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works, new school zone flashing beacons are to be activated on Monday, Nov. 4, to further comply with state safety regulations.

The upgrades are rooted in a city initiative to fully adhere to Act No. 103, which mandates the operation of school zone cameras within stringent time frames — specifically, to only function one hour before and one hour after school beginnings and endings.

Motorists who frequent routes such as Southbound South Carrollton Avenue, Eastbound Opelousas Avenue at Elmira Avenue, and segments of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Orleans Avenue, should be prepared for the changes. These areas are among those cited to have new flashers in the city's phased approach to enhanced enforcement of speed limits during school hours, as indicated in the city's announcement.

Those who disregard posted speed limits in school zones will be cited as part of the city's focus on youth safety. NOLA residents can check active school zones and hours on the city’s website, and for citation inquiries, the Parking Adjudication Office is available via email. As additional school zone flashers become active across New Orleans, the Department of Public Works (DPW) will provide public updates.
