As families across New Orleans gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) is stepping up to remind locals of the dangers that come with holiday cooking. Each year, Thanksgiving proves to be the peak day for home cooking fires, and the NOFD, under the guidance of Superintendent Roman Nelson, is advocating for extra caution, particularly when frying turkeys – a beloved tradition in the city.
The turkey fryer has become iconic in New Orleans Thanksgiving culture, but it's not without its risks. To ensure you can safely enjoy a deep-fried turkey, NOFD advises to always use turkey fryers outdoors and a safe distance from buildings to avoid potentially devastating fires. Additionally, keeping the fryer off wooden decks, out of garages, and on a level concrete surface can significantly reduce the likelihood of tipping and spilling scalding oil. According to a statement by the New Orleans Fire Department, units are prone to overheating, and the absence of a thermostat control means fires can erupt if the oil gets too hot and combusts.
Thanksgiving is not only a time for celebration but also for vigilance, particularly in the kitchen. NOFD's fire safety tips extend beyond turkey fryers to general cooking safety. Unattended pots and distractions can lead to accidents, hence the department's emphasis on prevention measures. It's essential to keep fire extinguishers ready and never use water on a grease fire, which can exacerbate the situation. The tips published in the NOFD's recent press release echo Superintendent Nelson's message of mindful cooking practices.
NOFD also cautions against allowing children or pets to come too close to the cooking area. Their curiosity or playful antics can quickly turn festive gatherings into emergency situations. The department underscores the involvement of all-purpose fire extinguishers in the kitchen and urges citizens to keep smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms in proper working order. As noted in the NOFD press release, "In the case of a fire call the fire department first, even if you try toput the fire out on your own."
With these preventative steps in mind, the New Orleans Fire Department hopes to ensure that the community's Thanksgiving will be remembered for the joyful times spent with loved ones, not the hazards that can arise from cooking traditions. As households prepare their feasts, it's essential to practice safe frying and mindful cooking, keeping the safety of all at the forefront of this holiday season.
