As Veterans Day approaches, the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (NC DMVA) is starting a tradition called Operation Green Light. This initiative runs from today through November 11, Veterans Day, and the NC DMVA encourages residents, businesses, and local governments to replace their regular porch lights with green ones to show support for veterans.
The effort aims to not only recognize the service of these individuals but also to shed light on the unique challenges many veterans face after returning to civilian life. "We are grateful for the contributions from our veterans and their families, Operation Green Light offers an opportunity for us to let veterans know that they are seen, and we deeply appreciate the sacrifices they make," NC DMVA Secretary Grier Martin expressed in North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs released statement. Key landmarks including the NC DMVA’s headquarters, the North Carolina State Capitol, and the North Carolina Executive Mansion will participate by illuminating their facades with green lights throughout the week.
Operation Green Light not only serves as a visual tribute but also an awareness campaign to stimulate public recognition of veterans' ongoing contributions to the community and the nation at large. Establishments like the SECU headquarters in downtown Raleigh have announced their participation, encouraging others to follow suit by lighting their exteriors in green. Beyond the gesture, the initiative is seen as a springboard for conversations about veterans' health, employment, and reintegration into society post-service.
By changing one outdoor light to green, North Carolinians can honor the men and women in the military. This small act shows appreciation for those who have served.
