An Oakland County man's gamble with a $10 lottery ticket paid off when he won $1 million from the Michigan Lottery's Million Dollar Madness instant game. The 51-year-old, who has chosen to remain anonymous, purchased his ticket from East Holly Oil at 8435 East Holly Road in Holly, per reports from ClickOnDetroit.
Upon realizing his windfall, the man told CBS Detroit, "I normally only buy $1 or $5 tickets, but I splurged and bought a $10 ticket." After scratching the ticket at home, his disbelief was mirrored by his wife, who scanned the ticket with her Michigan Lottery app three times, to ensure the reality of their newfound fortune. Despite the routine hope with each ticket purchase, the reality of such a significant win was hard to grasp for the couple.
The lottery winner opted for a one-time lump-sum payment of approximately $693,000, according to information from Detroit Free Press. His plans for the winnings are practical – to eliminate debts and financial obligations by paying off his house and cars, and attending to his bills.
"Winning is an unbelievable and emotional experience," the victor articulated in a statement obtained by CBS Detroit. He expressed relief at the prospect of reduced labor, acknowledging the win as "a major relief." Meanwhile, The Michigan Lottery notes that since the game's August inception, players have won more than $11 million with Million Dollar Madness. The game still boasts more than $42 million in remaining prizes, including two top prizes of $1 million each.
