A 34-year-old Oakland man has been taken into custody in connection with a shootout in downtown Berkeley that unfolded last month, according to the Berkeley Police Department. The incident, which occurred on October 24, prompted calls to law enforcement around 2:31 p.m., reporting gunfire near Henry Street and Berkeley Way. The suspect was apprehended yesterday morning after authorities served a warrant at an Oakland residence. In a report by the Berkeley Police Department, evidence linked to the shooting was found at the scene, which led to the identification of the suspect.

The arrest ensued with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service and the Oakland Police Department. The man arrested is suspected of several offenses, including assault with a firearm, negligent discharge of a firearm, and shooting at an inhabited dwelling. Upon his arrest, he was held at Santa Rita Jail with bail set at $260,000, Berkeleyside reports. On top of the charges he faced, police located and seized a dozen firearms and ammunition in a related investigation.

The suspect was already hospitalized for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound following the shootout that led to his identification. The Berkeley Police Department's spokesperson, Officer Byron White, disclosed that soon after the shooting, as per Berkeleyside, "a person with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound arrived at Highland Hospital for treatment." This turned out to be the 34-year-old suspect now in custody. Berkeley police are still investigating the incident and seeking other potential shooters who may have been involved.

The Alameda County District Attorney's Office has yet to charge the man formally, but he is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at 9 a.m. at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.
