Following a string of severe weather incidents, Oklahoma's Attorney General Gentner Drummond has cautioned residents to remain vigilant against contractor fraud. According to official statements, the period after natural disasters is often rife with attempts by fraudsters to exploit those who have incurred property damage in the storms.

Drummond emphasized the importance of due diligence before entering into agreements to hastily to repair damages. "Even though it’s tempting to move quickly after sustaining property damage, Oklahomans should carefully research businesses and contractors before hiring them," he advised. In a bid to prevent such fraud, the Attorney General's office is dispatching agents to six counties labeled as State of Emergency, where they will be setting up notices and educating homeowners on how to avoid potential scams, as per the Oklahoma Attorney General.

Practical advice has been offered to residents on steps to protect themselves. These include soliciting referrals from trusted sources, interviewing multiple contractors, and reviewing written proposals thoroughly. Residents are also advised against making large up-front and cash payments and encouraged to hire established local companies.

For those seeking further assurance or in need to lodge complaints, the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Unit can be reached. "Anyone can contact the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Unit to find out if complaints have been filed against a contractor or to file a complaint against a contractor," according to the same news release. The unit can be contacted at 1-833-681-1895 for those in need of assistance or to report questionable contractor practices.
