Orlando's community spirit shone bright this Thanksgiving as local volunteers pooled their resources to ensure no one was left without a warm meal during the holiday. In a display of holiday charity, Valencia College culinary students joined hands with the Salvation Army to prep and distribute a hearty feast to thousands across Central Florida. According to WFTV, more than 8,500 meals were prepared for those in need, spanning individuals facing poverty, homelessness, and solitude.
Working since the early hours, these volunteers embodied the Thanksgiving ethos, laboring over stoves to produce homemade stuffing and all the trimmings. "This is an experience for our students, not only in the culinary aspect, but also how to give back to the community," Alex Erdmann, the Dean of Valencia’s School of Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts, stated, as per WFTV. The effort resulted in over 2,000 pounds of turkey and various side dishes, expressing the community's commitment to generosity.
Meanwhile, the Orlando Magic kept up their tradition of spirit of giving with a 32-year streak of breakfast service at the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. The team did not only dish out plates of food but also moments of companionship to over 500 attendants from among the city's sheltered and unsheltered population. Coach Jamahl Mosley emphasized the importance of this tradition, stating to ClickOrlando, "It’s a privilege to come together and give thanks by serving those in need."
People can support these efforts by volunteering or donating to keep Orlando's spirit of care alive.
