Early Monday morning, a fire broke out in a South Los Angeles building, sending up large plumes of smoke visible throughout the area. The blaze, which started around 3 a.m. on the 8000 block of San Pedro Street, was battled by over 100 firefighters, according to NBC Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded to the emergency at an industrial facility, where the fire had engulfed a metal-clad building that seemed to house mercantile operations.
The LAFD elevated the incident to "Major Emergency" status as more than 16 fire companies responded to the scene at Allied Steel, and despite the aggressive nature of the fire, no injuries were reported, the details of the extensive firefighting operation were provided by the Los Angeles Fire Department's alert system. Adjacent businesses, including a cabinetry company, were also threatened by the fire, which extended inside one of the structures before crews could make entry and suppress the flames.
Due to the outbreak and subsequent firefighting efforts, San Pedro Street was shut down from Manchester Avenue to East 88th Place, impeding morning traffic, as detailed by NBC Los Angeles. Local drivers were advised to avoid the area to allow room for the LAFD Arson team to safely conduct their investigation into the cause of the fire.
