The City of Palmdale, in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), is gearing up to combat retail theft this holiday season with a new program dubbed Operation Secret Shopper. A squad of undercover deputies is set to mingle among shoppers to discreetly monitor and deter any criminal activity. As Mayor Austin Bishop expressed, "We’re watching you, and we’re prepared to act," adding that a zero-tolerance policy towards retail theft will be enforced, as reported by the City of Palmdale's official announcement.
This anti-theft initiative is all set to actively engage plainclothes deputies to seamlessly blend into the crowd, making it difficult for criminals to easily identify law enforcement officials. The plan is to not just be present, but to act decisively should suspicions be aroused. This approach aims to make sure that those bold enough to steal, are set to face the consequences of their actions. The undercover deputies are part of a broader strategy that includes community service officers and LASD actively monitoring retail theft incidents, as per the City of Palmdale. In the event of criminal actions, felons to not only be apprehended but also made to pay restitution, ensuring victims receive compensation for their losses.
Alongside these undercover operations, the City and LASD's collaboration extends to a Business Watch program that supports local businesses by sharing theft deterrent strategies and enhancing security with a visible uniformed deputy presence and other measures. Mayor Pro Tem Richard J. Loa reiterated the City's commitment to supporting local business owners, stating, "The City will not abandon our business owners to face this alone. We want to make it clear that if you think you can steal in Palmdale, think again," in a statement made by the City of Palmdale.
The community is encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the LASD at 661-272-2400 or to learn more about the Business Watch program, which they can do so by contacting Public Safety at 661-267-5234.
