A tragic event unfolded on the streets of Hayward yesterday, yielding the city's seventh fatal traffic incident this year. The Hayward Police Department reported a collision on Gading Road that involved a vehicle and a pedestrian. As detailed in a press release issued by the Hayward Police Department, officers responded around 1:33 p.m. to the scene where the unfortunate incident took place in a parking lot.
The officers arrived to find the driver and the pedestrian at the scene. Initial investigations suggest that the pedestrian, a 66-year-old male resident of Hayward, suffered a medical emergency that caused him to faint on the parking lot's surface. The driver, attempting a maneuver in the parking lot, reported he did not see the pedestrian lying on the ground, resulting in the collision. The pedestrian, despite being conscious and even speaking with the officers initially, was later pronounced dead at a local hospital after a sudden and steep decline in health.
The driver, a 52-year-old male from Hayward, was described as cooperative by authorities, providing a statement shortly after the incident. The pedestrian's identity has been established but remains withheld, pending next-of-kin notifications and following identification procedures guided by the Alameda County Coroner’s Office.
The Hayward Police Department urges anyone with information about the collision to step forward and contact their Traffic Bureau at 510-293-7011, citing the case number 2024-66440.
