A tragic sequence of events unfolded in Philadelphia’s Frankford neighborhood after a man attempted to steal a car and was fatally shot in the head. Sherwayne Garrison, 39, has been charged with murder, recklessly endangering another person, and possession of an instrument of crime following the incident which occurred at the intersection of Frankford Avenue and Pratt Street.
Police sources shared with FOX 29’s Steve Keeley that last Friday afternoon, Garrison left his car running to use an ATM when a 48-year-old man got into his vehicle and attempted to flee. The situation escalated when Garrison shot through the car window, hitting the would-be thief.
The stolen car subsequently crashed into a taxi down Frankford Avenue, the collision caught on surveillance video. The shooter, identified as Garrison, is reported to be a licensed gun owner with a permit to carry, according to police sources as referenced by CBS News Philadelphia. Despite his legal right to bear arms, his response to the attempted theft has led to serious criminal charges.
"I said, 'God, I might be dying,'" recounted Jacques Synvain, the cab driver involved in the crash, in a statement obtained by NBC10. The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital later that day at 6:17 p.m. The aftermath of the shooting and the subsequent crash was observed by NBC10 crews, where both vehicles appeared heavily damaged and the neighborhood was wrapped in red and yellow caution tape.
Though the identity of the deceased has not yet been released, Philadelphia police have confirmed Garrison’s arrest. Court records do not list an attorney for Garrison at this time.
