Three years ago, the City of Philadelphia made a significant move into the digital age with the launch of the Philadelphia Tax Center, a cloud-based tax system that replaced an outdated process that had been in place for over 30 years. Today, the Tax Center has achieved a range of milestones, streamlining tax management for both the city's residents and businesses, according to a recent announcement.
One key feature of the Philadelphia Tax Center is the ability for individuals to file and pay taxes online. To date, over 42,000 electronic petitions for Wage Tax refunds have been submitted, demonstrating the system’s functionality. The Tax Center allows refund petitions to be filed without a complex login process, with users able to complete them directly using the forms available on the website’s homepage, "You don’t need a username and password," the city's statement reads. The system has not only simplified filings but also heightened the accuracy of submissions and allowed for easy upload of supporting documents.
Property owners too have found relief through the Tax Center, with nearly 45,000 property tax relief program applications made through the system. The Homestead Exemption leads the pack with over 38,000 applications. By moving this process online, the city has managed to cut down on processing time, reduce errors, and save applicants a trip to the post office. As if that wasn't enough, more than 200,000 Tax Center accounts have been set up, giving users a dashboard to track their tax dealings in detail.
But the impact stretches out even further. For businesses and tax professionals who once upon a time had to endure long waits for postal delivery of tax records, the Tax Center has heralded a new age of accessibility. "Today, they can access these documents anytime and from anywhere," the city notes, highlighting the system's accessibility and widespread use. The Tax Center has processed nearly 340,000 payments, a significant volume that indicates the system's broad adoption.
A clear indicator of the system's success is the number of tax returns filed online. With filings nearing one million, this figure reflects the system's effectiveness and the city's dedication to providing a user-friendly and secure tax process. "The best part? Online filing is safe, secure, saves you time, reduces errors, speeds up processing, and saves you money!" as per the city's announcement.
