In the wake of an attack on Phoenix police officers, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office has secured a seven-year prison sentence for Elias Retes, confirming a serious stance against assaults on law enforcement. According to a recent statement released by County Attorney Rachel Mitchell, following the prison term, Retes is also slated for three years of supervised probation.
The incident that led to Retes' sentencing occurred on May 18, 2024, after Phoenix Police officers responded to reports of suspicious activity wherein Retes was caught setting objects ablaze near 525 W Lynwood St, and his subsequent resistance to detainment led to the assault of several officers, public records show although details about the nature of the officers' injuries were not disclosed. Retes entered a guilty plea to two counts of aggravated assault, classified under two separate felony classes.
"Violence against our men and women in blue shows a lack of regard for public safety that will simply not be tolerated in Maricopa County," County Attorney Mitchell remarked in the statement, stressing the diligence with which her office operates to hold offenders accountable.
