Early Wednesday morning in Puyallup, a Sergeant en route to training encountered a disturbing scene: a man walking in the center of the road had just violently leaped onto a woman's car, smashing her windshield. According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, the startled woman with her children in the car was left shaken by the incident as the man continued down 152nd St E, obstructing traffic and forcing a vehicle to the side.
The Sergeant, seeking to respond to this unexpected hazard, attempted to halt the man's progress only to be rebuffed verbally. Noticing something in the man's hands, the prudent officer opted to hold off on a confrontation until backup could arrive. Soon after, the man tossed a spent shell casing, heightening the tension of the situation.
When reinforcement arrived, an initial tasering attempt failed, prompting the man to flee. The reacting officers maintained a cautious gap, observing the man wield two dangerous metal spikes. It took negotiation, but eventually, the Sergeant convinced the suspect to surrender the spikes and relinquished them before seizing him, though the man attempted assault and resisted arrest amidst the capture.
Afterward, law enforcement confirmed with the woman that the suspect had, indeed, jumped onto her vehicle, terrorizing her and her young passengers before embarking on his defiant stroll. The 19-year-old was arrested and charged with Malicious Mischief, Resisting Arrest, and Assault on a Deputy. "Exceptional patience and great job negotiating with the man to drop his objects/weapons. Outstanding Work Sarge!" The Sheriff's Department applauded the officers' restraint. Notably, no injuries were reported during the alarming ordeal.
