In a cruel act that has sparked outrage and a call for justice within the metro Atlanta community, a man is accused of dragging two dogs behind his car—one tragically losing its life while the other is left scarred but surviving. Nonprofit organizations Halo House for Dogs and Georgia Animal Rights and Protection have now pooled resources to offer a combined reward of $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual involved, adding to the $1,000 previously put forward by the Henry County Humane Society, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The harrowing incident occurred September 13, at the Redan Recreation Center off Phillips Road near Lithonia, where surveillance footage captured a man exiting his vehicle untying the canines, and then hastily departing in what officials say he did in an attempt to obscure his license plate number from the cameras, Claire Simms Chaffins, spokeswoman of DeKalb County District Attorney's Office, elucidated the meticulous effort taken by the suspect to avoid identification FOX 5 Atlanta reports.
The suspect's vehicle is described as a dark-colored, four-door sedan, potentially a 2008 to 2012 Chevrolet Malibu, and the cruel driver is seen attired in dark pants, a white baseball cap, and a dark gray top sporting a white logo on the chest and white writing on the back.
While one of the dogs—a medium-sized, black-colored mixed breed—did not survive its grave injuries, the second canine, now named Laydon by the dedicated staff at the DeKalb County Animal Services, continues to recover from its ordeal, a poignant reminder of survival against grim odds and the continued battle for Laydon's complete healing, 11Alive has shared touching photos of the surviving dog Laydon.
DeKalb County officials are urging anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the DeKalb County Animal Enforcement's tip line at (404) 294-2939—it's not just a call for justice, it's a plea to uphold the intrinsic value of life, and a refusal to let an act of such brutality go unpunished.
