San Antonio has announced the winner of its 10th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Art Contest: 12-year-old Ashlynn Sokolowski from Robert G. Cole Middle School. Her artwork will represent the 38th Martin Luther King, Jr. March and Commemoration in January 2025. The City’s Department of Arts & Culture and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission reviewed over 40 submissions before selecting Sokolowski's piece, according to the City of San Antonio.
"Being recognized as the winner of the City of San Antonio’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 10th Annual Student Art Contest is such an honor," said Ashlynn Sokolowski. She expressed her view that the city reflects Dr. King's dream, stating, "Together WE are more. Together WE are San Antonio." Her artwork, which embodies the 2025 theme, "We are the Dream... It takes All of Us," was praised for its concept, artistic imagery, visual representation, and originality, as stated by the City of San Antonio.
District 2 Councilmember Jalen McKee-Rodriguez emphasized the power of art in fostering unity, stating, "Art offers each of us the ability to communicate meaningfully in ways words don’t always allow." This sentiment reflects the city's commitment to honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy as an advocate for equality and justice, as reported by the City of San Antonio.
The MLK Commission, chaired by Dwayne Robinson and in partnership with District 2 Councilmember McKee-Rodriguez, invites the entire community to commemorate this important figure in American history.
