The San José Police Department has arrested Joseph Martinez, 46, a San José resident, for a homicide that claimed the life of an adult male at a local unhoused encampment. The fatal incident, which was the city's 13th homicide of the year, took place on Mclaughlin Avenue at the junction with HWY 280 on May 9.

According to the San José Police Department, patrol officers responded to the scene of the shooting at approximately 5:46 PM and found the victim bearing at least one gunshot wound. The critically injured man was then transported to a local hospital, where he remained in critical condition until he succumbed to his injuries on May 12, said authorities. His identity is yet to be divulged, pending next of kin notification.

With a comprehensive investigation led by the SJPD Homicide Unit Detectives, the case led to the arrest of suspect Martinez on October 31 in Reno for an unrelated crime. Following extradition procedures, Martinez was brought back to San José last Thursday before being booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for murder. Detectives continue to seek the motive and are investigating the circumstances that led to the deadly shooting.
