Earlier this week, a San Mateo couple faced the legal consequences of a proactive patrol stop as they found themselves under arrest for narcotics sales. According to the San Mateo Police Department, the incident occurred on Sunday when officers flagged a vehicle for an equipment violation on South Norfolk Street.
Upon making the stop, officers engaged with Jose Lopez-Lopez, the driver, and Norma Herrera, the passenger. Lopez-Lopez gave officers the green light to search his car, and the officers discovered an assortment of drugs and related paraphernalia. Found in the car, several plastic baggies, along with a digital scale and a not insignificant sum of $8,723 in cash, were also confiscated.
The subsequent search turned up 18.9 grams of cocaine and 0.9 grams of methamphetamine, leading police to believe that the couple was involved in selling narcotics. The investigation results prompted a call to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, and both Lopez-Lopez and Herrera were booked into the county jail on related charges.
Norma Herrera, a 47-year-old San Francisco resident, is facing charges, including possession of narcotics for sale. Similarly, the 35-year-old San Francisco resident, Jose Lopez-Lopez, stands accused of the charges of possession of a controlled substance for sale. Both face serious legal challenges as the confiscated material, including the cash, now serves as evidence in the ongoing case.
