
On October 5, a Santa Monica police officer was violently attacked in front of the police station by a man wielding a knife, as revealed by recently disclosed bodycam footage. The confrontation ended with the officer shooting and killing the assailant.
The sequence of events commenced when the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Deyaa Abdelhadi Halaibeh from New York, assaulted an employee and stole a knife set from a nearby Target store. Shortly thereafter he was seen on surveillance video making his way toward the police headquarters where he requested to speak with an officer by pressing the call button at the front door during the ensuing encounter with Officer Halaibeh, with his right hand concealed in his jacket, was asked, "What's in your jacket? I'm kind of nervous with your hand in your jacket like that," as stated by the ABC7.
Responding to the officer's expressed concern, Halaibeh retorted with, "You're nervous?" before lunging and attacking him with a purple 8-inch Cuisinart blade, the stolen knife from Target, KTLA detailed the escalation, noting that after being briefly fended off, Halaibeh was shot by the officer as he persisted in his attack even after being thrown to the ground. The officer sustained multiple severe stab wounds to his neck and shoulder area.
The officer received medical treatment and was released from the hospital the following day, as per CBS News Los Angeles. The suspect, however, was pronounced dead at the scene after Santa Monica Fire Department paramedics' attempts to provide life-saving measures were unsuccessful.
The incident remains under active investigation by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, as noted by ABC7.
