Authorities in Placer County are engaged in a continuous search effort for two 20-year-old fishermen who were swept away by the fast-moving current of the American River on Saturday evenin. An incident that began with recreation quickly turned tragic when one man was overtaken by the river's flow, prompting a second to enter the water in an attempt to assist his companion, both men ultimately were subdued by the force of the current and have since been missing, as reported by KCRA.
The Placer County Sheriff's Office first received a distress call before 9 p.m. on Saturday, nearly two hours after the first man was perceived to be carried away, according to CBS News. Responding crews, which included a dive team and aircraft, initially had to suspend the search due to low visibility and the inherent risks posed by the river's swift currents when darkness fell, making it unsafe to search by raft.
The search resumed on Sunday with extra help, including two K-9 teams and two drones, along with 18 search and rescue team members working on both sides of the river. Dive teams were ready to assist once conditions allowed. Despite hours of searching, there was no sign of the two men. The search will continue on Monday, according to CBS News.
