After a substantial blaze severely damaged the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge, commonly known as the Big Mac Bridge, Cincinnati Parks and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) are providing some relief to area residents and park-goers by reopening parts of the disrupted Sawyer Point Park. As of last Friday, the western lawn, the southern river pathway, and the pickleball/tennis courts are once again accessible to the public, WCPM reports. However, the area beneath the damaged bridge remains off-limits as safety precautions persist.

In a release, ODOT confirmed that while northbound lanes on the bridge are operational, the southbound stretch of I-471 continues to be closed, WLWT notes. Access to I-471 South has been restricted at several downtown Cincinnati points, including Liberty Street, 5th Street, and U.S. 50 East and West, impacting both local and through traffic. For semis and hazmat transporters, suggested detours involve the I-275 to I-71/I-75 route, which is expected to alleviate some of the congestion seen since the incident.

The unfortunate event unfolded last Friday when flames originated from the 1,000 Hands Playground at Sawyer Point and spread to the bridge. Luckily, the fire required several hours of concerted efforts by firefighters to be controlled without resulting in injuries or hazardous material concerns, FOX19 reports. The bridge underwent partial closures to facilitate repair, including shoring towers designed to stabilize the weakened structure.

ODOT anticipates that the groundwork for these stabilization efforts will commence by the end of the week, with materials being dispatched from New Jersey. The preparatory work for this phase has been crucial, with utility companies addressing conduits that were left hanging or loose following the fire and crews updating traffic controls and signage for long-term use. The area under the bridge approach, adjacent to Pete Rose Way, remains inaccessible to the public, and motorists are advised to take alternative routes so as not to impede the ongoing repair operations. Although no definitive timeline has been established for the full bridge reopening and affected routes, ODOT has pledged to inform the community of developments through its website.
