Tragedy struck early on Saturday morning in Yamhill County as two vehicles collided on Hwy 18, resulting in a fatal incident and serious injuries. According to a report from the Oregon State Police, the crash happened near milepost 58, and authorities responded to the scene at approximately 7:44 a.m.
A preliminary investigation, detailed by Oregon State Police, reveals a harrowing scene where a 22-year-old man from Woodburn, Giovanni Zamora, operating an eastbound Acura CL, reportedly lost control and overcorrected, meeting a Toyota Avalon head-on. Under investigation, the speeding Acura, drifting off the road before the fatal event, suggests speed may be a key factor.
The collision was severe, claiming the life of Zamora at the scene. The other driver involved, 21-year-old Mary Spiller of Philomath, was operating the westbound Toyota and sustained serious injuries. She was promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment.
For hours, the aftermath of the crash paralyzed the highway, with a closure lasting about four hours as reported by Oregon State Police who were supported on-site by several agencies, including Dayton Fire and Rescue and the Newberg-Dundee Police Department. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
