A juvenile was arrested by Springfield Police after he allegedly used a stolen vehicle to strike an officer. The incident, which occurred around 11:35 a.m. last Saturday on Boston Road, involved a car reported stolen two days prior. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the 16-year-old driver reversed the vehicle, hitting an officer in the arm and nearly hitting two others, according to Springfield Police Department statement.
Officers located the stolen Hyundai at a gas station, with the vehicle's engine running and four individuals inside. In an attempt to quickly escape, the driver maneuvered the car over a curb onto Berkshire Avenue, where officers momentarily lost sight of it. It was later found crashed on the 400 block of Berkshire Avenue, with the suspects having fled into nearby woods. The juvenile driver was subsequently located and taken into custody.
The identity of the juvenile has not been disclosed due to his age, and no specific charges have currently been released. The officer who was impacted by this event was subsequently treated for an arm injury at Baystate and has since been released. The condition of the stolen vehicle or any efforts to apprehend the remaining occupants have not been elaborated on at this time.
The Springfield Police Department has not provided further details surrounding the arrest or the conditions preceding the incident. The circumstances under which the car was stolen and the manner in which the juvenile came to possess it remain to be clarified. The event raises questions about juvenile crime and the potential danger posed to law enforcement officers during vehicle-related incidents.
