Post-Halloween, St. Louis Park residents are being encouraged to not just throw away their celebratory pumpkins and gourds. The city has announced a compost initiative running from Nov. 1-6, where folks can give their festive decorations another life by turning them into compost, rather than having them end up in landfills. Pumpkins can be disposed of either with yard waste, in a brown-lidded organics cart, or at the special collection event at The Rec Center parking lot, according to an announcement released by the city.
For those opting to use their regular collection day, the process is simple: place your pumpkin in a reusable yard waste container or a paper yard waste bag, making sure to not exceed 40 pounds per container or bag. Residents wishing to make the most out of their organics carts can place their pumpkins in BPI-certified compostable bags or paper grocery bags within the brown-lidded carts. Meanwhile, the Rec Center will actively welcome discarded pumpkins at a specially designated container located in the southeast corner of the parking lot between Nov. 1 – 6, where pumpkins and gourds can be dropped off at any time.
However, there are a few guidelines to follow before disposal. City officials remind citizens that candles, candle wax, paint, and glitter must be removed from the pumpkins before they are deposited for composting. The goal behind these precise instructions is to ensure that the compost produced is of high quality and free from non-organic materials that could potentially contaminate the composting process. Furthermore, multifamily organics drop-sites won't accept Halloween pumpkins due to the risk of overfilling the carts.
