Stanislaus County recently passed Proposition 36, which calls for tougher penalties for drug and theft crimes. The Stanislaus County District Attorney confirmed on their Facebook post that the proposition received widespread support from voters and will go into effect by December 18.
Proposition 36 addresses the rise in drug crimes related to the opioid crisis, particularly fentanyl. The law increases penalties for certain drug offenses and allows specific theft crimes to be upgraded from misdemeanors to felonies, resulting in harsher consequences.
Opponents argue that the law may lead to higher incarceration rates without addressing the root causes of addiction and theft, such as social inequality and lack of support systems. Supporters believe the tougher penalties are necessary to deter crime and ensure public safety.
