Authorities have apprehended a suspect connected to the recent Southeast double shooting that left two injured. The Metropolitan Police Department disclosed the capture of 20-year-old Bernard Matthews, as reported on the MPD’s official website. Last Friday, gunfire erupted in Southeast D.C., prompting police to the 600 block Mellon Street Southeast in response.
It was there officers found a teenage male suffering gunshot wounds, who was swiftly taken to a hospital. His injuries were serious but not life-threatening. An adult male victim later sought treatment at a local hospital for gunshot wounds linked to this same bout of violence. Investigators traced the incident back to the 3000 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, Southeast. Their investigation eventually led to the identification and subsequent capture of Matthews yesterday.
The charges laid upon Matthews are serious: Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Carrying a Pistol without a License, Possession of a Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device, and Receiving Stolen Property. The swift work of the Seventh District Officers and diligent effort by detectives enabled them to issue a lookout and bring the suspect into custody without incident, as per MPD’s official website.
Details surrounding the motive and circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation.
