Memphis Police Department is currently dealing with the aftermath of an arson attack that left one of its squad cars severely damaged. Last night, the Memphis Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire at 444 N. Main St., the address of the MPD North Main Station, as reported by Local Memphis. The blaze, which occurred just after 8:30 p.m., caused an estimated $40,000 in damage to the police cruiser.
According to details provided by investigators, an "accelerator" was used to deliberately ignite the fire near the vehicle's rear undercarriage, suggesting a targeted attack on the police property. Ironically, the Memphis Firefighters were called in to extinguish flames that seemed to quickly threaten to consume the vehicle parked close to the precinct's front door. This information comes from an earlier report by Action News 5.
The extent of the damage was significant, with estimates ranging from $35,000 to $45,000, as noted by Action News 5. The accelerant was poured near the trunk of the car, igniting a fire at the gas tank on the driver’s side, which managed to do significant damage before being brought under control.
While no injuries were reported, the Memphis Police Department and the Memphis Fire Department are working closely to apprehend those responsible. A piece of a gas can found near the vehicle could serve as a crucial element in the investigation. Individuals with information have been urged to contact CrimeStoppers, as mentioned in the Local Memphis report. The person or persons responsible for the arson could potentially face serious charges for their actions.
Scenes from the incident showcase the cruiser with an open hood and trunk, with the back window exhibiting clear signs of fire or smoke damage. The ongoing investigation is expected to shed further light on the motives behind the arson as well as any potential suspects.
