A Tampa man has been indicted on federal charges for unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition, according to an announcement from United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg. The defendant, Shannon Pernell Brown, age 39, could face a substantial amount of time behind bars, with a minimum sentence of 15 years and up to life in federal prison, if convicted under the Armed Career Criminal Act.
The charges stem from an incident on August 31, when Brown was reportedly found to be in possession of a Glock firearm and ammunition. This indictment comes as a sobering reminder of the consequences that follow when a person, already bearing the weight of prior felony convictions—such as conspiracy to traffic in cocaine, trafficking in cocaine, and possession of cocaine with intent to sell or deliver—chooses to again grapple with the justice system by allegedly violating federal firearm laws. The Department of Justice underscores that an indictment is a formal charge and not a determination of guilt, and that Brown is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The federal indictment also announced the intention to forfeit the Glock firearm and ammunition involved in the alleged offense, signaling the government's continued resolve to not just prosecute, but also to dismantle any instrumentalities connected to criminal activity. This case aligns with the broader efforts of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative that aims to stitch together law enforcement at all levels and the communities they serve to tackle violent crime and gun violence. The renewed strategy, launched in 2021, emphasizes community trust, support for violence prevention organizations, strategic enforcement priorities, and outcome measurement.
Behind the investigation of this case stand both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Tampa Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Jeff Chang is set to prosecute the case. The indictment of Shannon Pernell Brown represents not just a singular legal proceeding, but a piece of the ongoing struggle to maintain safety and lawful order in neighborhoods across Tampa and beyond. With PSN's revitalized strategy and committed oversight, the hopes are to systemically deter potential offenders and to earnestly rehabilitate those who have strayed, all while upholding the rule of law that is foundational to any society seeking to fairly secure the life and liberty of its constituents.
