An early morning calamity in the City of Cudahy led to a fatal shooting that left a 17-year-old boy dead and another teenager, 15, in critical condition. Deputies, who were originally responding to a domestic violence call nearby, were drawn to the sound of gunfire on the 4400 block of Clara Street just before 1 a.m., KTLA reports.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrived to find the older teen with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene. The younger victim, discovered at the back of an apartment building, was swiftly rushed to surgery with at least one gunshot wound to his upper torso, trying to tragically hang onto life. Details regarding the relationship between the two teens and potential motives for the shooting weren't immediately clear, as authorities continued to investigate, NBC4 noted.
Crime scene tape encircled the area as deputies began a methodical search for evidence. The Medical Examiner's office arrived around 4 a.m., but the removal of the body was expected to take some time, according to KTLA's coverage. As the day unfolded, residents of the usually quiet street found their neighborhood at the center of a dire search for answers.
With no suspects identified and details scarce, the investigation pressed on. "We could be searching for more people. We need to obtain more information on what occurred and continue our investigation from there," Lt. Steve De Jong said in a statement obtained by FOX LA. Deputies were also canvassing for surveillance footage and conducting interviews in hopes of piecing together this devastating puzzle. The involvement of gang activity has not been ruled out as a possible element of the crime.
