Yesterday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott in conjunction with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT), unveiled the final report from the Texas Advanced Nuclear Reactor Working Group, signaling the state's ambitious plan to dominate the advanced nuclear power sector. “Texas is the energy capital of the world, and we are ready to be No. 1 in advanced nuclear power,” Abbott proclaimed, highlighting the state's eagerness to bolster energy reliability and job opportunities. “By utilizing advanced nuclear energy, Texas will enhance the reliability of the state grid and provide affordable, dispatchable power to Texans across the state,” a statement obtained by the Office of the Texas Governor.

Commissioner Jimmy Glotfelty echoed the governor's enthusiasm, asserting the endeavor to evolve into a leading advanced nuclear industry promises to generate safe, dependable energy, and the Governor's guidance and the dedication of individuals contributing their expertise is a testament to the state's commitment to becoming a leader in this innovative field, “The economic and policy recommendations we’ve outlined will inspire swift action and help Texas become the leader in advanced nuclear energy,” Glotfelty told Office of the Texas Governor press release. The report is a result of Abbott's directive to the PUCT in August 2023, where he tasked the newly formed working group to chart out a trajectory for the advanced nuclear reactors in Texas.

Over the past year, this team has devised strategic recommendations to position Texas at the forefront of nuclear innovation. The focus is not merely on power generation, as the state looks to strengthen its grip on the energy industry at large and to energize the local economy by cultivating a skilled workforce adept in this novel technology. The report suggests that such advancements could prove instrumental in meeting Texas' growing energy demands fueled by its expanding population.

As Texas considers a shift in energy production, the focus is not just on nuclear power but on economic growth, job creation, and securing a reliable electrical grid for the future. “As we build an advanced nuclear industry in our great state, we will ensure Texas remains a leader in energy and strengthen the Texas grid to meet the demands of our growing state,” a statement obtained by the Office of the Texas Governor.
