Early last Sunday morning, the streets of Tiburon became the backdrop for a brief vehicular chase after the ALPR cameras spotted a stolen vehicle. At around 8:30 a.m., Tiburon police were dispatched to pursue a 2024 Subaru SUV, confirmed by the department's social media post. As officers signaled the vehicle to stop, the situation quickly escalated when the driver, instead of complying, hit the gas pedal and led the police on a chase into Belvedere.
The vehicle was abandoned by the suspect, who fled on foot, leaving the SUV in "drive" and without engaging the parking brake, risking an uncontrolled roll. An astute officer managed to prevent what could have been an incident, jumping into the rolling SUV and bringing it to a safe halt.
The men and women of the Tiburon Police Department soon after located the suspect on West Shore Road. The 30-year-old San Rafael resident put up a fight but was subsequently detained by the officers. Found on him were suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
A local resident provided police surveillance footage of the suspect attempting to dispose of a backpack in his yard. Contents of the backpack, when discovered, included stolen property, knives, and what appeared to be burglary tools.
The suspect now faces multiple charges, among which are possession of a stolen vehicle (496 D(A) PC), possession of a controlled substance (11377(A) H&S), possession of unlawful paraphernalia (11364(A) H&S), and evading a peace officer (2800.1(A) CVC) as stated in the Tiburon Police Department's announcement. He was booked into the Marin County Jail on these charges.
