Former President Donald Trump has secured a return to the Oval Office after a standout performance in the 2024 presidential election against Vice President Kamala Harris. KXAN reports that in Texas, a traditionally red state, Trump's lead was both commanding and historic, amassing nearly 6.4 million votes, which is the highest number for any presidential candidate in the state's history. Trump's Texas tally outdid his own 2020 vote count by over half a million.
In contrast, Harris's vote count dipped from the Democratic turnout in 2020, collecting just above 4.8 million votes, which is around 425,000 votes fewer than what President Joe Biden received during that election cycle. Trump dominated wins across the vast majority of Texas by securing 242 of the 254 counties, while Harris took the remaining 12. According to MSN, this signifies a noteworthy shift from 2020, where Biden had won 22 counties.
The changing Texas landscape saw Trump flip Tarrant and Williamson counties, regions that Biden previously held. Suburban areas in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex, such as Parker, Denton, and Collin counties, also bolstered Trump's numbers, each yielding a Republican margin exceeding 50,000 votes. Despite Harris' stronghold in urban centers, her margins showed a decrease when compared to the Democratic showings in the previous election; Travis County's lead was cut down significantly, from a difference of 275,000 votes in 2020 to 228,000 in 2024.
There has been a significant rightward swing across the state, with 233 counties moving toward Trump and only 21 tilting to the left, as reported by KXAN. Of particular note are the border counties such as Maverick, Webb, Starr, Dimmit, and El Paso, which each shifted over 20 points for the right. On the other side of the spectrum, Loving County swayed toward Harris by 7.8 points, and Kaufman County, known for its rapid growth, moved slightly to the left by 6.1 points.
Trump's statewide margin of victory was over 1.5 million votes, a leap from the 631,000 votes in 2020. This margin, representing a 13.68 percentage point lead, became the most significant presidential margin of victory in Texas since 2012. The 2024 election in Texas, with its pronounced pivot toward the Republican column, reflects a resounding victory for former President Trump and a stark signal of political reassessment within one of America's largest states.
