Traffic can be a nightmare, but there may be some comfort in knowing the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is on the case, using fluid dynamics to study and improve congestion. "Our primary goal is safety—keeping people on our roads safe," Khalid Jamil said, as per TXDOT, highlighting the effort to alleviate the bottlenecks causing daily headaches for drivers.

TxDOT engineers are working diligently to understand traffic patterns and design roadways that help minimize gridlock and maximize flow. This is crucial in a state that's growing as rapidly as Texas. According to the TxDOT article, real-time data from various sources is being used to monitor traffic flow 24/7, allowing engineers to adapt quickly to any problems that arise on the roads.

The agency has been putting funds into the Texas Clear Lanes initiative, aiming squarely at fixing major chokepoints. Innovative intersection designs like roundabouts, diverging diamonds, and displaced left-turn intersections are just a few of the solutions they're rolling out. As Jamil explained to TxDOT, "If the data shows that congestion is a recurring problem, this needs to be studied." They identify the chokepoint, but they also look upstream to tackle any contributing factors.

However, TxDOT acknowledges that they can't do it alone—they need drivers to play their part too. Safe driving practices are emphasized as a crucial component of traffic safety. "Safety is incorporated into every project we make to serve the people of Texas," revealed Jamil to TxDOT.
