Weddington residents felt their homes shake nearly two weeks ago when an accidental explosion ripped through a house on Steeple Chase Circle. After an extensive investigation, the Union County Fire Marshal's Office has concluded that the unfortunate event, which injured two individuals, was a result of a fuel-air explosion. The blast, described by a neighbor to WCNC as akin to an Improvised Explosive Device blast, originated from the garage although the exact trigger among three potential sources remains unclear.
According to the QC News, the Fire Marshal’s Office urges residents to maintain their appliances and be mindful of flammable materials, especially in such storage-prone areas as garages.
The County’s first responders and specialized investigators received acclaim for their collaborative efforts during the investigation, asserting an enduring devotion to public welfare and safety. "We extend our gratitude to the numerous agencies that collaborated with us throughout this investigation," Fire Marshal Jon Williams stated to WBTV. The elderly man injured in the explosion, now released from the hospital, is on the mend, while the woman with him during the incident continues to recover.
Details from the explosion report reveal that while the explosion itself was felt countywide a neighbor described the frightening experience to WCNC, detailing that it felt as though "the blast came into our house. It felt like it lifted the house up some and set it back down." The neighbor, who compared the sensation to his experience with an IED blast in Iraq, lucky in circumstance with his son shielded by a bathroom during the explosion's occurrence.
The couple inside the home experienced different outcomes: the man was critically injured and flown to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital's burn center, while the woman escaped with non-life-threatening injuries. The community's thoughts are with them and their families, who had previously led normal, uneventful lives. Officials are committed to investigating the incident further.
