The University of Houston has placed the Pi Epsilon chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity on interim suspension following allegations of hazing and the use of racial slurs. The university's Dean of Students is investigating the claims, which suggest the fraternity violated the student code of conduct during the spring 2023 and fall 2024 semesters, as stated by The Cougar and reported by Click2Houston.
The allegations include incidents such as forcing a prospective member to streak across campus and directing racial slurs at guests during fraternity events. In one report, two Black women expressed that, they had felt "disrespected, marginalized and unsafe" at a party hosted by the fraternity, a complaint supported by the statements they filed with the Dean of Students. The report also described a scavenger hunt organized by the fraternity, which included activities such as purchasing pregnancy tests and obtaining pornographic material, actions that have raised concerns, as per Click2Houston.
Students at the University of Houston have commented on the issue, highlighting the inappropriateness and outdated nature of such actions in today's society. "It's 2024. Why are we still having people hazing and degrading others?" University of Houston student Drusila Saucedo posed in an ABC13 interview. Fellow student Carter Wilson shared a similar sentiment, stressing the necessity of an investigation whenever hazing accusations surface.
The University of Houston, when approached for comment, has been concise: "The investigation is in process. It involves fact-gathering and multiple interviews. If the complaints are found to have merit, discipline, and sanctions will be handled through the Student Conduct process as described in the Student Handbook," their spokesperson stated to ABC13. However, students like Saucedo are calling for more than acknowledgment; they seek actionable change to address and curb such demeaning behaviors.
The Kappa Sigma fraternity's rights to participate in on-campus events or organize university-related activities have been suspended until further notice. The fraternity will have a hearing before the University Hearing Board, where the allegations will be reviewed and addressed.
