
The University of Minnesota Twin Cities has recently seen a notable improvement in its rankings among global institutions, according to the latest release from Shanghai Ranking's 2024 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. The university has made gains in several fields of study, with 29 of its 48 subjects climbing the rankings compared to previous years. An impressive total of 36 subjects are now positioned within the top 100 globally.
"Seeing the University of Minnesota rise in the Shanghai Ranking across multiple disciplines is a recognition of many people's devoted efforts to advance research, discovery and creative activity that enriches our understanding and builds a better world," said Executive Vice President and Provost Rachel Croson. The institution has managed to quickly make a name for itself in ten key disciplines, ranking in the top 25 globally, with areas such as ecology securing the second spot in the world. In a statement obtained by the University of Minnesota's news release, Croson applauded these achievements and emphasized the ongoing efforts to tackle future challenges.
These rankings reflect the university's status as a leading educational powerhouse, with rankings that include No. 8 in psychology, No. 11 in both medical technology and communication, No. 14 in veterinary sciences, as well as library & information science, No. 21 in education, and No. 22 in economics. Other subjects like management and statistics both secured the No. 23 spot, showcasing the university's varied strengths.
The 2024 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, which has expanded to include over 1,900 universities from 96 countries and regions, uses a variety of objective academic indicators along with third-party data to rigorously measure performance in each discipline. The robust methodology ensures universities are assessed on a level playing field. Other notable rankings for the University of Minnesota include No. 29 in Dentistry & Oral Sciences, No. 30 in Biotechnology, and similarly in Environmental Science & Engineering and Geography. The academic institution also takes pride in its placement within the global top 50 across subjects like Earth Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, and Public Administration. Completing their global presence, they’ve ranked in the 51-75 bracket in various fields, including Clinical Medicine and Law, among others.
