Milwaukee's lakefront has become the staging ground for the latest addition to the U.S. Navy's fleet, the USS Beloit (LCS 29), a Freedom-variant littoral combat ship. Slated for commissioning on Saturday, Nov. 23, the ship made its prominent arrival Sunday night, docking at Veterans Park, as reported by Urban Milwaukee. The USS Beloit's commissioning ceremony, a naval tradition marking the warship's readiness for active service, is expected to draw public attention and implementation of maritime pride.
The USS Beloit's arrival honors the city of Beloit, Wisconsin, notable for its contributions to shipbuilding, including the Fairbanks Morse plant which built the engines powering many of Navy's vessels. In a ceremony steeped in tradition, retired Army Maj. Gen. Marcia M. Anderson, the ship's sponsor, is scheduled to issue the command, "Man our ship and bring her to life!" as per JS Online. This command will trigger the hoisting of the commissioning pennant, officially designating the Beloit as a commissioned ship of the U.S. Navy.
Local residents have expressed enthusiasm about the commissioning, with Linda Gilbert from the namesake city of Beloit describing the warship as "great, it's beautiful, it’s history," in a statement obtained by FOX6Now. The USS Beloit joins a fleet that has faced its share of challenges in the past, yet now represents the advances and enduring industrial spirit of its eponymous city.
Following the commissioning ceremony, the USS Beloit will set off for Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville, Florida, to assume its home port assignment. The event promises to be a momentous milestone for the U.S. Navy, symbolizing both Beloit's nautical heritage and a revitalized American commitment to naval innovation and defense readiness. The ceremony is set to begin at 10 a.m. on the coming Saturday and will be available to the public through livestreaming, as detailed by Urban Milwaukee.
