A deadly collision that occurred in August on a bustling Matthews street has resulted in the arrest of a Waxhaw man, police announced. Nima Justin Behrouzjou, 26, faces several serious charges after the crash that killed Ramon Alberto Martinez and left another individual severely injured.

The incident took place on Monroe Road between Highway 51 and Galleria Boulevard early in the morning of Aug. 23, as reported by WBTV. Witnesses told authorities they observed Behrouzjou's vehicle, a 2020 BMW M340i, swerving around traffic before crossing into the oncoming lane and colliding head-on with Martinez's 2007 Honda Civic. According to QC News, Behrouzjou was traveling at 68 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone at the moment of the crash.

Further investigation by authorities revealed that Behrouzjou had multiple substances in his bloodstream, including amphetamines, cannabis, cocaine, fentanyl, and alcohol. QC News shed light on the details from a warrant that exposed his intoxication levels, which likely contributed to the reckless operation of his vehicle leading up to the tragic event.

Matthews Police Department arrested Behrouzjou on Nov. 4, supported by evidence and witness statements. He is currently facing charges of felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired, speeding, not having an operator's license, and reckless driving with wanton disregard. Behrouzjou, who was also injured in the accident, is being held on a secured bond of $100,000, as WCNC Charlotte notes. His indictment by a grand jury paves the way for a court date scheduled for January 23, 2025.

In the aftermath of the crash, Monroe Road was closed for several hours as first responders attended to the scene, where Martinez was pronounced dead before he could be transported to the hospital. The road was eventually reopened by mid-morning.
