Mel Trotter Ministries is preparing to host its 21st annual Turkey Drop event in West Michigan, with the goal of collecting 5,000 frozen turkeys for families in need this Thanksgiving. The event, focused on addressing food insecurity, will take place today at multiple locations where donations can be made.

According to FOX 17, the nonprofit has partnered with the Muskegon Rescue Mission and Gateway Mission to maximize their outreach and the drop-off points this year include two Celebration. Cinema sites, Mel Trotter Ministries in Grand Rapids, their Jenison Thrift Store, as well as locations in Muskegon and Holland; the event spans from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m, today.

WZZM 13 reported words of Pam Liggett, director of development at Mel Trotter Ministries, who illuminated the stark reality, "Food is about twice the price as it was a few years ago, so a Thanksgiving meal is just incredibly expensive," acknowledging the growing financial burden on families striving to partake in the annual celebration.

In an effort to alleviate the effects of inflation and rising housing costs, Feeding America West Michigan plays a crucial role by providing storage and transportation for the turkeys, as stated in an interview obtained by WGVU News, a partnership clearly enhancing Mel Trotter’s capacity to serve the community; Pam Liggett also added, "The need is greater than ever," highlighting the significant demand for assistance within the shelter and the broader community she serves.

Nevertheless, for those who cannot physically donate a turkey but still wish to contribute, Mel Trotter Ministries maintains an online platform where financial donations are accepted—every $20 given is the equivalent of one less family missing out on a turkey this Thanksgiving season.
